“Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”: Additional insurance should remain voluntary


Employers of Poland urge  the Minister of Health to amend the act on medical activity so that medical malpractice insurance for hospitals remain voluntary rather than compulsory. This would enable hospitals to save up to several hundred thousand złoty per year.


According to regulations currently in force, starting on January 1st 2016 every hospital will be required to have a medical malpractice insurance – otherwise, hospitals will face removal from the medical entities register. Despite changes in the formula for calculating the maximum value of the insurance, the contribution is still far too high. Information acquired by Employers of Poland in over a hundred hospitals shows that the contribution ranges from ca. 250 000 PLN to 700 000 PLN, depending on the size and profile of the hospital.


In the opinion of Employers of Poland, the requirement for additional insurance (apart from the mandatory OC) is unjustified also because of the fact that the costs of it could just as well be spent on treatment.


– Given the low level of financing for the healthcare system, as much money as possible should be spent on treatment. All additional burdens have an impact first and foremost on patients, lowering the standard and quality of medical services – says Andrzej Mądrala, Vicepresident of Employers of Poland.
