“Rzeczpospolita": Smuggled cigarettes and vodka drain the budget

21-09-2015

The treasury could get almost 8 bln PLN a year more if not for the grey market for tobacco products and alcohol.

The problem is increasingly serious. In the second quarter, the contribution of illegal cigarette sales to total sales has increased from 15.4 percent last year to 19 percent – estimates the Almares research institute.

According to expert in the sector, the growth of the grey market is caused by the increases in excise in recent years.  A pack of cigarettes already costs 13 on average.  – We have reached such a level of prices for tobacco products, that consumers no longer accept it, so they will look for illegal substitutes – says Grzegorz Byszewski, expert of Employers of Poland.
