Andrzej Malinowski in “Rzeczpospolita”: Acquisitions for the army – let’s do it well at last

No more talks with Airbus, Poland will not buy caracals – when I heard the news, I was reminded of a quote attributed to American general George Patton: "There is a time to take counsel of your fears, and there is a time to never listen to your fear". The rules of war are surprisingly similar to the rules of business. The issue of caracals demonstrates it perfectly – not only because it concerns military equipment – President of Employers of Poland writes in “Rzeczpospolita”.

– Immediately after the news of the talks on the offset being abandoned broke, concerned or even whiny comments could be heard: the Polish army is now defenseless, the offended French will sue us, this does not look well in the eyes of our esteemed international partners, particularly before an imminent visit of the French President (which has been delayed by the French on Friday, after the article was accepted for print – editor’s note). When I read it, I could not help muttering a few strong words. Ladies and gentlemen! Let us get off our knees at last! Enough of bowing our necks like fearful supplicants hanging on to their masters’ doorknobs – urges Malinowski.

– This was supposed to be an acquisition for over 13 bln PLN! Anyone could spend this much money. The trick is to spend it as well as possible – and that is no mean feat. Offset is equally important as military issues, it cannot be treated it dismissively. Particularly, when one intends to buy 50 caracals for the price of 109 black hawks. Today we have an opportunity to thoroughly consider our true needs. Many experts have called into question the idea of buying one helicopter model for special and marine actions. They also believe that there is no need to by a “superhelicopter” for routine transport tasks, as it would be like buying a limousine to move furniture – he concludes.
