A billion PLN – that’s how much money the state loses on illegal gambling every year. That sum is an equivalent of an annual budget of over 30 small municipalities. You could buy 4 thousand luxury cars or 2.5 thousand medium-sized flats in one of the biggest cities in Poland. At a conference at the offices of Employers of Poland, prof. Michał Królikowski and Arwid Mednis PhD of the Warsaw University presented legal analyses depicting the situation in online betting.
The current law states that participation in betting provided by an unlicensed foreign bookmaker is a contravention or tax offence. Sadly, the players ignorance of this does not absolve them of the legal responsibility for illegal gambling. Legal bookmakers have no chance to compete with those who function online and keep their servers abroad - often in Cyprus or Malta. Moreover, betting services are subject to a 12 percent sales tax – one of the highest tax rates on betting in Europe.
