Poland is totally unprepared for the implementation of the EU directive concerning the application of patients' rights in cross-border healthcare.
Although the assumptions to the bill that is supposed to implement the directive had already been prepared in February, 2013, it was only on 24th September that the Council of Ministers approved the document. - Now we are facing the whole legislative path, so one can assume that the directive will be implemented not earlier than at the end of the year – said Andrzej Mądrala, the vice-president of the Employers of Poland.
The Cross-border Directive is both a great opportunity and a threat to Polish hospitals. On one hand, one can expect quite a large number of additional commercial patients, on the other hand, it can be assumed that part of Polish patients choose treatment outside the country, which will be equivalent to the outflow of money.
