The title is a recognition of his achievements as Prime Minister and Speaker of the European Parliament. Rector of the Medical University of Warsaw prof. Marek Krawczyk drew attention to the fact the former Prime Minister belongs to a select group of recipients of his university’s honorary degree who are not involved in medicine. This is the 67th honorary title awarded by the Medical University and only the 4th presented to an individual from outside of the medical profession. Marshall Józef Piłsudski was the first in 1921, followed by count Bogdan Hutten-Czapski in 1931 and marshall Edward Rydz-Śmigły in 1939. Thus far, most recipients of honorary degrees were distinguished foreign medical scientists.
The gala on the occasion of awarding Jerzy Buzek an honorary degree was attended by Vicepresident of Employers of Poland Janusz Pietkiewicz.
