The Sejm subcommittee established to proceed the draft of an act on the profession of a physiotherapist and amendments to some other acts concluded its works. This is a very important development in light of the lack of regulations with regards to rehabilitation which meant that anybody could offer such services. As a consequence, the service providers’ lack of qualifications sometimes put patients’ health at risk.
The act increases the safety of treatment by eliminating persons with no qualifications from the market. It specifies the competences and education required for physiotherapists. After graduation, future therapists will have to pass a state exam in order to work in the profession and each physiotherapist will have an assigned license. An institution associating physiotherapists will also be introduced – the National Chamber of Physiotherapists.
In the course of the works of the subcommittee 20 meetings were held. Members of Employers of Poland associated in the rehabilitation forum took part in all of them. We are glad that many suggestions improving the project were taken into consideration. In our view, the final draft answers the needs of physiotherapists, employers and – most importantly – the patients.
The issues of the physiotherapeutic profession have been addressed for years, but never before have the chances for an effective solution been so big. We hope that the draft is passed by the Sejm in its current form.
